What Is Islam?

Islam” is the voluntary surrender to the will of God and obedience to His command. Allah is the Arabic word for God.

A Muslim is one who freely and consciously accepts Islam as a way of life and practices it.

The Six Articles of Faith

Islam has six core beliefs, also called the Articles of Faith. Think of them like the “foundations” of the Muslim worldview—simple, profound, and life-changing. Let’s break them down:

01

Belief in the Oneness of God

Also known as “Tawheed”. This is the central tenet of Islam, emphasising that there is no god but Allah (God) and He is indivisible.

Allah is beyond our imagination: not human, not bound by time or space, and definitely not like us. He’s the Creator, Sustainer, and the One who knows what’s in our hearts.

02

Belief in Angels

Angels in Islam aren’t the fluffy, harp-playing ones you see in cartoons. They’re created from light, obey God, and each has a job.

Some deliver messages (like Angel Gabriel), others record everything we do (yes, everything), and some are guardians. Think of them as God’s “cosmic task force.”

03

Belief in the Holy Books

God didn’t just leave us on “read.” He sent down guidance through the scriptures:
– The Torah (to Moses)
– The Psalms (to David)
– The Gospel (to Jesus)
And finally, the Qur’an (to Muhammad ﷺ)

The Qur’an is the final, unchanged, and universal message for all of humanity.

04

Belief in the Prophets

Muslims believe God sent prophets to guide people. Think of them as humanity’s teachers. From Adam, Noah, Abraham, Moses, Jesus, and finally Muhammad ﷺ—the last and final prophet.

No prophets after him. (So if someone tries to sell you “Prophet 2.0,” kindly hit unsubscribe.)

05

Belief in the Day of Judgment

One day, everything ends. No sequel, no reboot. We’ll all stand before God and be held accountable for our actions—big or small. The ultimate justice system: no bribes, no lawyers, no loopholes.

For the believer, it’s a day of hope and reward. For wrongdoers, a day of truth and consequence.

06

Belief in Qadr (Divine Decree)

Life isn’t random. Everything happens by God’s knowledge and will—both good and what we see as bad. But here’s the balance: we still have free will to make choices.

The next step is called the “Shahada“. It is to verbally declare the faith by reading out the phrases below:

Ash-hadu an la ilaha illa Allah, wa ash-hadu anna Muhammadan rasul-Allah

“I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah”
